“Plank Owner” is a term we borrowed from the Navy. It refers to the first members of a newly formed unit – and in the Navy, that unit is a ship. Plank Owners are said to “own a plank of the deck.”
Our ‘Plank Owner’ program is a way of saying ‘thank you’ to those who help us get to where we are and where we are going. In the world of Wounded Warrior Corps, Plank Owner status means that you have become highly significant to us in one of two ways:
#1 Plank numbers 1-1000 means that you are someone who helped make us financially viable by being among the first to believe in our mission and commit to a Tier 1 Presenting or Tier 2 Supporting sponsorship at one of our events and paid in full. These are lifetime acknowledgements and you will be a VIP and be included in our VIP Plank Owner Wall (made from SC Cyprus wood and also displayed virtually online) at special events, trips, and displayed at our headquarters. In addition you will have your own WWC Coin and personalized drinking mug which will hang above our bar for your exclusive use.
#2 Plank numbers 1001+ means that you are someone who did work to make us who we are and or contributed in some significant way that led us to believe we would not be Wounded Warrior Corps without you. This is a lifetime acknowledgement. You will have your own WWC Coin (another military tradition that carries great significance) and a personalized drinking mug which will hang above our bar for your exclusive use.
A Little More About “Being Coined”
Coins are a military tradition. Units, and even individuals will often have a custom coin made that they hand out to significant people. Among the prized possessions of military people is their coin collection – usually displayed prominently somewhere in their home or office. It’s a big deal to them – and to us.
